Course Description

Rehab Nursing Series Course 2

Focus: Promoting Safety & Function while Handling Patients

This course reviews safe patient handling principles with an emphasis on personal responsibility for addressing the patient's functional goals while using safe patient handling techniques and good clinical decision-making to help patients achieve their goals.

New nurses joining the rehab team will find this course helpful in making the switch to rehab-focused approaches to care while nurses with experience in rehab will find tips to facilitate and ensure safety while promoting functional skills development.

Course Chapters

Chapter 1 Overview
It is your back and you should be concerned about taking care of it. This chapter provides an opportunity for self-evaluation for risks of isolated and cumulative back injury and reinforces the reasons why nurses wear out their backs. Wear-and-tear issues are cumulative and preventive care should be taken at home as well as at work.

  • Whose back is it?

Chapter 2 Safe Patient Handling Guidelines
There has been a tremendous amount of research done to support and guide safe patient handling strategies. This chapter of the course reviews these guidelines and applies them to rehabilitation care. Site specific guidelines can be incorporated in this section as well. The Learner is introduced to STALL (Stop/Think/Assess/Look at goals/Leverage resources) as a strategy to promote critical thinking and attention to the changing conditions that occur as different caregivers handle patients.

  • What is best practice?

  • How do I use these guidelines and still promote functional gain?

  • How do I compensate for differences in patient and caregiver abilities?

Chapter 3 Safe Patient Handling strategies in Action!
Put those guideline into action in real life. This chapter encourages the use of algorithms and critical thinking to solve the patient handling problems of several patients.
